There was tension at Obera Boys Secondary School in Ndhiwa Sub-county on Sunday after a form three student died while playing football with his schoolmates.

Upon learning of the death of their colleague, students at the institution went on a rampage destroying property.

The protest was later contained after security officers from Magina Police Post were called to quell the tension.

According to witnesses, the deceased was among students playing football within the school compound when he collapsed after hitting the ball with his head.

Fellow students are said to had tried performing first aid on him before rushing him the school administration building.

Central Kabuoch Location Chief Capis Olala said the students raised alarm and their tried to find a means to take him to hospital but there was a delay as a vehicle could not be readily found.

“I’m aware that the school has contracted a local resident who owns a car to be offering transport services during emergencies. Unfortunately, he was not near when he was called,” the administrator said.

Teachers had to look for alternative means of taking the injured student to hospital.

The deceased was pronounced dead at Samari Medical centre in Rodi Kopany.


Elsewhere, police are investigating a fire incident at Mbita High School which razed down two dormitories.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilian said the fire started at 7am when students were at the assembly.

“The cause of the fire has not been established. We are, however, investigating the incident and will take action against whoever is responsible," he said.

Firefighters from the Homa Bay County government managed to contain the fire.
