Residents of Runganga village in Embu County are reeling in shock after a man allegedly hacked his grandmother to death and seriously injured his grandfather following a domestic quarrel.

Ms Jonnes Wamae, 75, succumbed to injuries on the spot Tuesday while her husband Wamae Njega, 80, was rushed to Embu Referral Hospital in critical condition. The suspect has since been arrested.

Area assistant chief, Joseph Nyaga, said the suspect is likely to face murder and assault charges. Residents said the man picked a quarrel with the victims before he took a machete and set upon the victims.

After the brutal attack, the assailant took off but he was later flushed out of his hideout and taken to Embu Police Station.

Ms Muthoni Ndwiga, a relative called on the police to ensure that the assailant is punished in accordance with the law.

"When I arrived at the scene I found my mother lying in a pool of blood while my father was writhing in pain," said Ms Ndwiga.

The assistant chief said a murder weapon was recovered from the scene of crime and will be used as exhibit when the suspect appears in court.
