A remandee was shot dead and another arrested while attempting a daring escape from Bungoma GK Prison on Sunday morning.

The two tried to escape in different directions immediately after breakfast.

Bungoma South divisional police commander (OCPD) Wilson Nanga said Caleb Masinde, a 25-year-old facing rape charges, was confronted while scaling the perimeter wall.

“Masinde was re-arrested by a prison warder on patrol while trying to jump over the wall,” he said.

Remandee Douglas Khaoya managed to jump over the fence but police pursued him.

Mr Nanga said he was fatally shot in a nearby farm as he defied orders to stop.

“After jumping over the fence, Khaoya was spotted by a sentry officer who challenged him to stop but he declined, forcing the officer to shoot him,” he said.

The body was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary.

Mr Nanga said investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations will reveal more information about the two remandees.

The facility was in the news two months ago after 107 inmates tested positive for Covid-19.
