Brian Olunga, the aide to Kimilili politician Brian Khaemba who was allegedly shot by Kimilili MP-elect Didmus Barasa last week, died of a pistol bullet which struck the right side of his head, a post-mortem report has revealed.

Olunga died of profuse bleeding when the bullet got stuck in his head, according to western region pathologist Dr DM Muchana.

Dr Muchana, who was in the company of family doctor Dickson Olunga and a detective from the homicide department Francis Nyabutho, carried out the postmortem on the body at Bright Mortuary in Kimilili on Tuesday. The procedure lasted two hours.

The pathologist said Mr Olunga was shot at close range with the pistol bullet that hit the brain and stuck in.

“We have carried out the postmortem and we have all agreed that the deceased died after bleeding when the bullet hit his right side of the head and stuck in the brain,” said Dr Muchana.

Pending investigations

On Tuesday, Mr Barasa, who was declared the MP-elect for Kimilili, was detained for 10 days pending investigations into the murder of Mr Olunga.

He had earlier said he did not shoot the man and also wanted to know who killed Mr Olunga, bearing in mind that there were many guns at the Chebkhwabi polling station when the incident occurred.

He denied that he had gone underground after the incident and said he showed up at the police station after learning from television stations that he was being sought.

Bungoma principal magistrate Charles Mutai said Mr Barasa had the potential of interfering with investigations and that he should be detained for the said time.

The family of Mr Olunga who hails from Malava constituency in neighbouring Kakamega county is in pain and has appealed to the government to ensure justice is served.

Following the incident, Kimilili politicians led by former MP Suleiman Murunga want the Kimilili parliamentary election nullified and repeated.

Mr Khaemba, Olunga’s boss, contested for the Kimilili constituency parliamentary seat on a DAP-K party ticket.
