A police officer who disrupted a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) signatures process in Bomet has been charged in court.

Constable Peter Langat was charged with malicious damage to property which he denied.

He is alleged to have wilfully and unlawfully destroyed the BBI constitution amendment Bill, 2020 signature collection booklet.

The suspect, who was represented by Bomet-based advocate Florence Chepkemoi, was arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Lilian Kinyali.

The magistrate set the case for mention on December 17. The suspect was released on a Sh20,00 cash bail and a surety of the same amount.

The officer was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Lelekwet Village, Bomet East.

He is alleged to have approached the area assistant chief Robert Kipng'eno Kattam and requested to be given the booklet so he could append his signature in support of the proposed Bill.

However, the officer tore two pages off the book and threw them into a river.

The officer, who was said to have been drunk at the time of the incident, was later arrested and detained at Longisa police station, according to Bomet East sub-county police commander Francis Gikeri.

Chiefs and their assistants have been leading the voters’ signature collection exercise across the country.

Government leaning politicians have been working with the administrators in working towards the success of the exercise.
