Family plans burial of parastatal boss who disappeared 12 years ago

Silvano Tubei, the former managing director of Kerio Valley Development Authority.

More than 12 years after he mysteriously disappeared from his home, the remains of Silvano Kipraisi Tubei, the former managing director of the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), will finally be buried, bringing an end to the agony his family says they have endured while searching for him.

Mr Tubei went missing on September 26, 2012 and his remains were discovered on December 31, 2023 by a farm worker who was clearing a thicket on the 60-acre Chekurmum farm in Kapyemit village, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County. His remains were covered with a blanket.

Locals informed the area chief and security agencies, leading to the exhumation of the bones and other remains on January 4 this year, which were found buried in a shallow grave about 50 metres from his palatial home, dressed in a black T-shirt and trousers and wrapped in a blanket.

When he was reported missing at the time, family sources claimed that he had left his home at 10am on September 26, 2012 and was never seen again.

A case of his disappearance was filed at the Kaptagat police station in 2012.

To bring closure to the matter, the family published an obituary in local dailies on November 19 this year, announcing that his remains would be buried on November 22 in his village of Mogorwa in Tenges, Baringo Central.

“The cottage will leave Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Funeral Home, Eldoret, on November 22 at 7am for Kipkabus residence, for a brief prayer service at his home at 9am. Thereafter, they will proceed to Mogorwa Primary School grounds for the main memorial service at 11am and later interment at his Mogorwa residence in Tenges, Baringo County,” read part of the obituary.

Mr Tubei went missing in 2012 at the age of 58 and is survived by two children.

His nephew, Tom Tubei, said it was a relief to have closure now that the matter was under investigation and in court.

“After 12 years of uncertainty, apprehension, despair and the thought that we would never get to know what really happened to our uncle, it was depressing. Now that the matter is under investigation and in court, it is a relief to have closure,” said Mr Tubei.
