Kenyan journalist wins top reinsurance award

Kenyan journalist Steve Mbogo is among the winners of the inaugural Continental Reinsurance Pan-African Reinsurance Journalism Awards.

The awards attracted close to 100 entries from French and English speaking journalists in Africa. The award ceremony was held in Seychelles during the annual Continental Re CEOs Summit on Wednesday.

Mr Steve Mbogo was awarded Best Re/Insurance Industry Feature Article for his story that explores micro insurance in Kenya, published by London-based insurance trade magazine, Commercial Risk Africa.

Mr Mbogo has previously covered the Kenya insurance industry for Business Daily. Ms Nike Popoola of Nigeria’s Punch newspaper was awarded the Pan-African Reinsurance Journalist of the Year for her article on how African reinsurers struggle to gain a bigger share of business in their respective countries and how retention of premiums in local markets will boost African economies.

Evans Boah-Mensah of Ghana’s Business and Financial Times newspaper was awarded Best Re/Insurance Industry Analysis and Commentary for his article on life insurance growing through micro and risk schemes.

Continental Reinsurance initiated the awards in 2015 to recognise and promote the media in Africa.
