Computer maker Dell is shifting focus from personal computers to services as it embarks on a 2014 marketing strategy.

The firm is fixed on growing its revenue by providing data protection and software consultancy services to government, small and medium enterprises and corporates.

Dell president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mr Aongus Hegarty, says Kenya is at the top of its expansion plan due to the growing need for ICT, especially amongst SMEs.

“As devices multiply regionally, software protection becomes a major concern as most mid-sized companies seek to acquire knowledge on how to protect and manage their devices,” Mr Hegarty said.

He added that consumers had developed a craving for technology and this had shaped their interests in service provision.

“We have started this mission by deploying technology for agricultural research to Kenya Agricultural Research Institute,” said Mr Stewart Van Graan, Dell managing director for Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.

Dell recently opened a regional office that will enhance its operations in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and Eritrea.

The firm has employed about 6 technology managers who will be in charge of its operations in the region.

IDC figures for July state that PC sales were slow for Dell in the region during the first half of the year.

Analysts say this has prompted the firm to move fast in diversifying its services to suit the first growing IT market.

The firm has also embarked on training technology start-ups and will soon put up an innovation hub to support their efforts.
