Building skills, shaping character: What your child will learn at Potterhouse School

Potterhouse School: Our Story, Our Community

By Evans Ongwae and Juliet Wawira Ngari

For many parents, choosing the right school for their children is one of the most critical decisions they will make. That’s because beyond the academic excellence they will be keen on, factors such as teacher quality, student-teacher relationship, students’ relationship with their peers, the level of attention and concern given to the students, emotional and psychological safety of children, and the overall environment, play a significant role in determining the ideal learning institution. For some parents, religion and shared beliefs matter too.

Christian values

For parents seeking a school that integrates strong Christian values into quality education, Potterhouse School stands out. As the school places emphasis on academic excellence, it also moulds children in values that shape their character, coaching them on the biblical worldview and inspiring them to a life of excellence and impact.

British National Curriculum

Potterhouse School offers a well-rounded education from Kindergarten to A-Levels, following the globally recognised British National Curriculum (BNC). The syllabus is designed to be dynamic and skills-oriented, equipping students with knowledge that is both applicable in daily life and adaptable to the ever-evolving global landscape.

The school’s structure follows key stages of learning:

Kindergarten (Ages 1.5 – 5 years)

Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2)

Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

Key Stage 5 (A-Levels) (Years 12-13)

The curriculum helps the teachers to bring the outside world to the classroom. It’s about students participating fully and being engaged in what they learn, and gaining knowledge beyond the textbook.

Education at Potterhouse School is designed to go beyond academic abilities, maintaining a strong focus on developing the whole child by creating an environment that encourages students to be critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and confident communicators. This ensures that students not only thrive academically, but are also nurtured in their talents in sports, music, drama, or art.

The school appreciates that every child is unique and is created in the image of God. This understanding ensures that learning at Potterhouse is child-centred, not teacher-centred, recognising individual strengths and aspirations, and fostering personalised learning.

Physical development is central in the life of a child. Potterhouse is equipped with facilities in which children can explore a variety of sports such as football, swimming, hockey, netball, touch rugby and basketball. With robust programmes in place, the school offers an opportunity to those with dreams to pursue professional sports careers, to hone their skills and talents.

The school incorporates global exposure in learning through field trips, excursions and immersion programmes, ensuring that students are equipped with international competence in preparation for an interconnected world, while remaining connected to their local communities and appreciating their cultural roots.

Dedicated educators

The teachers at Potterhouse play a crucial role in shaping students’ academic and personal growth. They serve as guides, mentors and role models, fostering an environment where students feel seen, heard and supported. They help to mould the children by being involved in their academic, spiritual, and overall school life. They encourage children to achieve success by being self-driven, while giving them the necessary attention and support.

Community-driven environment

Moulding the children to reach their full potential is a collaborative effort driven by teamwork beyond the classroom. Potterhouse School fosters a sense of community where parents, teachers and non-teaching staff work together to create a supportive and enriching environment where effective learning can take place.

Steady growth

Over the years, Potterhouse School has grown to accommodate more students and provide a broader range of academic programmes. The school now operates two campuses: The Junior School, located in Runda; and recently, the Senior School located on Glory Road, off Kiambu Road, near Paradise Lost.

In response to a growing demand, the school has introduced a crèche class for children between 1.5 to 2.5 years, to serve parents seeking an early start for their little ones.

The school launched A-Levels in September 2024, expanding into a comprehensive educational institution that serves students from early years to pre-university studies. Potterhouse continues on an exciting journey that has been marked by steady growth.
