Bridging Africa's tech skills gap: Learning accelerator AfriCDSA registers notable milestones in four years

AfriCDSA Celebrates 4th Anniversary

African Centre for Data Science and Analytics Ltd (AfriCDSA), one of the leading learning accelerators in Africa, celebrates four years of bridging tech skills gap in Africa’s job market.

Started in 2020 by a group of young data science professionals, AfriCDSA has managed to successfully equip over 1,500 professionals with the most sought-after skills in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence (AI).

In a world increasingly driven by technology, AfriCDSA stands as a beacon of hope, addressing a critical need across the continent and beyond. The organisation offers high-quality training in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

From smartphones to AI-driven applications, technology permeates every aspect of modern life. According to World Economic Forum 2023 report, more than 75 percent of companies are looking to adopt emerging technologies. However, many talented Africans face significant barriers due to a lack of tech skills, impeding their access to opportunities in the global market.

Recognising this challenge, AfriCDSA has made it its mission to empower Africans with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital age.

Since its inception, AfriCDSA has reached several significant milestones. “Four years ago, we embarked on a mission to bridge the skills gap in Africa's job market and empower organisations through data-driven solutions,” says CEO Xaviour Aluku. “The organisation has successfully graduated over 1,500 students, providing them with industry-accredited courses that have a global reach.”

Despite the rapid advancements in technology, the educational infrastructure in many African countries struggles to keep pace. This discrepancy leaves many young Africans unemployed or underemployed.

According to a report by TechCabal, a staggering 140 million youths, approximately 31 percent of the African youth population between the ages of 15 and 35, are unemployed and discouraged. AfriCDSA addresses this issue with its tech-based learning programmes designed to meet industry standards and requirements, ensuring youth are well-equipped with the right skills needed to enter the job market.

Watching AfriCDSA’s documentary, one can only marvel at the transformative impact of the organisation's programmes. Christopher Mukuwa, a Certified Data Scientist and AfriCDSA’s former student from Zambia, praises the high-quality, industry-aligned courses and the continuous support from instructors. “The instructors were amazing, and even after completing my course, I remain in contact with the team for potential collaborations,” he shares.

Beyond its educational programmes, AfriCDSA has expanded its consultancy services, partnering with organisations globally to provide tailored data solutions.

The organisation is committed to continuous improvement and innovation, with plans to launch new programmes tailored to specific regions. This vision aims to deepen AfriCDSA’s impact on a global scale, ensuring that more people can benefit from its transformative programmes.

AfriCDSA’s journey over the past four years has been marked by several key achievements. The organisation’s curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry experts to ensure relevance and applicability. Courses cover a wide range of tech topics, equipping students with the skills needed to solve real-world problems.

“The impact of our programmes is evident in the success stories of our alumni. Many have gone on to secure jobs in leading tech companies, both within Africa and internationally. The rigorous training and hands-on approach adopted by our instructors have made our graduates highly sought after in the job market,” says Paul Ondiek, the Marketing Insights Manager.

AfriCDSA offers professional certification rather than academic degrees. This underscores the practical and industry-oriented nature of their training programmes. These professional certifications, accredited by the International Association of Business Analytics Certification (IABAC), equip students with the specific skills and knowledge demanded by employers, further enhancing their employability and success in the industry.

Hans Volkers, Founding Director of IABAC, notes: “Today, I recognise AfriCDSA for its outstanding efforts in bridging the skills gap in Africa. AfriCDSA’s commitment to high standards and quality education aligns perfectly with IABAC’s goals. As an accredited partner, they bring innovation to the table.”

Moreover, AfriCDSA’s commitment to accessibility ensures that its programmes are available to a broad audience. The organisation offers flexible learning options, including online classes, to accommodate students from different backgrounds and regions. This approach has enabled AfriCDSA to reach students in remote areas, and has produced graduates in countries such as Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, South Africa, and the Caribbean, providing them with the opportunity to develop valuable tech skills.

Otieno Calvins, the Executive Director, emphasises: “Our primary aim is to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, equipping our students with the skills they need to thrive in the ever-evolving tech landscape. We believe in the potential of every individual and are committed to fostering an environment where they can excel.”

The organisation’s success is also attributed to its dedicated team of instructors and staff. AfriCDSA’s instructors are industry professionals with extensive experience, bringing practical insights and knowledge to the training sessions. The support provided by the team extends beyond the duration of the courses, with ongoing mentorship and career guidance available to alumni.

AfriCDSA’s consultancy services further extend its impact by helping organisations to leverage data to drive decision-making and innovation. The consultancy team works closely with clients to develop customised solutions that address specific business challenges. This service has positioned AfriCDSA as a trusted partner for organisations seeking to harness the power of data.

Looking ahead, AfriCDSA is poised for continued growth and expansion. The organisation plans to introduce new programmes focused on emerging technologies and specific regional needs. These initiatives aim to provide specialised training that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities within different global markets.

“Our vision for the future is to stay ahead of technological trends and ensure our programmes remain relevant and impactful. By tailoring our training to meet the distinct needs of various regions, we can better equip our students to succeed in an increasingly globalised job market,” says Xaviour.

The journey of AfriCDSA is a testament to the power of education and technology in transforming lives. The organisation’s efforts have not only equipped individuals with valuable skills, but have also contributed to the broader goal of economic development in Africa.

By bridging the tech skills gap, AfriCDSA is helping to create a more inclusive and prosperous future for the continent and even the world at large.
