Stop early campaigns

What you need to know:

  • ODM leader Raila Odinga was at the coast, and like Dr Ruto also drew huge crowds at his rallies.
  • These forays into various regions by politicians, who have set their eyes on the 2022 elections, are needlessly dividing Kenyans.

The next General Election is two years away but the events of the past weekend have shown what is really wrong with this country.

Deputy President William Ruto was in western Kenya to fundraise for boda boda operators and women’s groups. It was a poorly disguised campaign for the 2022 presidential election.

DP Ruto has made his desire to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta clear and he is so determined that, it seems, nothing will stop him.

However, the DP was not the only person engaging in premature campaigns. ODM leader Raila Odinga was at the coast, and like Dr Ruto also drew huge crowds at his rallies.

The common characteristic at these rallies by the two political kingpins was the total disregard for the safety guidelines to curb the spread of Covid-19.

It was as if the Health ministry protocols to protect the people from the deadly pandemic no longer matter. At the rallies both in Kisii and Mombasa counties, it was if the country is back to normal.

The biggest worry is that these meetings at the weekend have needlessly fuelled the mounting political tension. The politicians have been making utterances that border on incitement.

These forays into various regions by politicians, who have set their eyes on the 2022 elections, are needlessly dividing Kenyans.

At this rate, it is only be a matter of time before they turn into violent clashes between the rival camps. We saw an indication of the things to come when rowdy youths protested against Dr Ruto’s Kisii visit by blocking roads and burning tyres.

It is a shame that Kenyans hardly ever get the time to concentrate of developing their country because of the ceaseless politicking.

The politicians must hold their horses and allow the completion of programmes and projects. These premature election campaigns must be condemned by all.
