What you need to know:

  • Death caused by Covid-19 has been recorded in those with underlying conditions, including the above, but if managed or prevented early, then fatalities will reduce.
  • Fats and oils are identified as saturated fat when in solid form at room temperature (25°C); usually extracted from animal products and plants.

Is your fat healthy? People often ask this question. Most people believe high cholesterol intake is harmful with serious effects such as atherosclerosis, a condition characterised by the development of thick fats on the inner walls of blood vessels.

It ultimately leads to hypertension and obesity, which is accompanied by type-2-diabetes, coronary heart disease and some forms of cancer. These conditions are preventable.

Death caused by Covid-19 has been recorded in those with underlying conditions, including the above, but if managed or prevented early, then fatalities will reduce.

For decades, we’ve been consuming meals without considering their nutritional value or their harmful effects. Most diseases and conditions are brought about by what we eat. Essential nutrients comprising proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats and vitamins strengthen our immunity and keep us healthy.

Now begs the question; which type of fats are healthy? Fats and oils are identified as saturated fat when in solid form at room temperature (25°C); usually extracted from animal products and plants.

Trans-fats are formed when liquid oil is changed to solid form. Characteristic change in property of fats and oils is imparted by fat and oil-soluble foreign substances, resulting in colour, flavour and odour changes, which is harmful to human systems.

30-minute daily exercise

Fats and oils are known to promote overweight but choosing the type, and, checking on our lifestyle is essential in averting conditions linked to hypertension and obesity. I would recommend unsaturated oil to be 15 per cent — 20 per cent, saturated fat less than 10 per cent whereas trans-fat should not be in anyone’s diet, with respect to their cholesterol levels.

Fats and oils have a crucial role in our bodies; they are a source of energy, essential fatty acids our bodies cannot synthesise, insulate our bodies and protect our organs, hence we cannot do without but should be taken in regulated amounts.

Maintaining a rich diet with sufficient amounts of micronutrients, reducing junk, 30-minute daily exercise, hydrating, enough sleep and minimising stress would help boost the immune system. Always balance your fat amounts for the day.
