What you need to know:

  • American ‘security firm’, Bancroft Global Development, is moving into the Central African Republic, effectively replacing Russian paramilitary corporation Wagner.
  • The United States authorities have played no role in the development, with officials privately indicating that Washington wants to strengthen the CAR’s ability to maintain its own security.
  •  The CAR is one of the more unstable Sahel states with little central government control and numerous past deadly disputes between competing interest groups, including between Chinese extracting gold and other minerals and Wagner operatives, as foreign states have vied for control of the country’s rich mineral resources.
